- Handbook for Public Playground Safety
Published by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has updated its Handbook for Public Playground Safety, which is now available for download or to order. The updated Handbook contains new guidelines from CPSC staff for playground equipment for children as young as six months old, track and log rolls for older children, and playground surfacing, as well as suggestions on protecting children from sun exposure on playgrounds. - Annual Report of Attorney General on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Programs, 2005-2006
On January 1, 2007, Attorney General Robert McDonnell released the Annual Report which provides an overview of grant programs and services that are available for domestic violence and sexual assault victims and a description of major funding sources. The Report also details several other initiatives throughout the Commonwealth, including public awareness campaigns, training activities, and other statewide efforts to combat domestic violence and sexual assault.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
- BRFSS Fact Sheet 2005-2006 - Intimate Partner Violence in Virginia
To provide a reliable estimate on the prevalence and incidence of sexual victimization, several nationwide, representative telephone surveys have been conducted. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), an on-going telephone health survey system, tracks health conditions and risk behaviors of adults in the United States. In 2005 and 2006, the Virginia BRFSS survey included questions on Intimate Partner Violence. This fact sheet uses the data from 2005 and 2006 to estimate the extent of sexual violence among Virginian adults 18 and older. (.pdf)

- CDC - Preventing Child Sexual Abuse
CDC's Injury Center has developed Preventing Child Sexual Abuse Within Youth-serving Organizations: Getting Started on Policies and Procedures to assist youth-serving organizations as they begin to adopt prevention strategies for child sexual abuse. The guide identifies six key components of child sexual abuse prevention for organizations.
The guide includes prevention goals and critical strategies for each component. Suggestions for addressing challenges and tools to help organizations get started are also provided. (.pdf)

- Chronic Disease in Virginia - A Comprehensive Data Report (2006)
The Virginia Department of Health's Division of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control has released this report, a comprehensive look at the burden of chronic disease in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The report can be a resource to public health program planners, policy makers, health care providers, and researchers in their efforts to identify disparities and barriers and to design solutions to reduce the burden of chronic disease in the state. - Drugs, Brains, and Behavior: The Science of Addiction
"Drugs, Brains, and Behavior: The Science of Addiction" is a 30-page full-color booklet that explains in layman's terms how science has revolutionized the understanding of drug addiction as a brain disease that affects behavior.
"The Science of Addiction" discusses the reasons people take drugs, why some people become addicted while others do not, how drugs work in the brain, and how addiction can be prevented and treated. Like diabetes, asthma or heart disease, drug addiction is a chronic disease that can be managed successfully. The new publication complements the HBO documentary called "Addiction".
- An Epidemiological Profile: Substance Use in the Commonwealth of Virginia
The Governor's Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (GOSAP) has prepared statewide and city/county epidemiological profiles to provide data to inform efforts to reduce and prevent substance abuse and its consequences. These reports are intended to provide quick, easy access to consistent, comparable data to: assess and prioritize needs, plan and implement evidence-based strategies that have been proven effective, allocate funding and other resources, and monitor trends to improve results. - The OAS Report: A Day in the Life of American Adolescents: Substance Use Facts
The OAS Report presents facts about adolescent substan3ce use, including the initiation of use and treatment. The data presented in this report are from the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), the 2005 Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS), and the 2005 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS).
- Virginia Maternal Mortality Review Team (MMRT) Report
The Virginia Department of Health, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, has released their new report on maternal deaths titled, Pregnancy-Associated Maternal Death in Virginia 1999 - 2001. (.pdf)
Fires and Home Safety
- Residential Structure and Building Fires
An overview of residential structure fires and trends for a variety of residential structures. The report also addresses residential building fires for each of the three residential occupancy types. The report is based primarily on 2005 NFIRS data and the 2005 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) survey data.

- Focus on Prevention
SAMHSA has developed this practical guide to successful prevention strategies. Easy-to-read content includes two-page summaries of eleven substance abuse prevention topics and a model timeline for carrying out a prevention activity. "Focus On Prevention" provides a starting point. It offers brief, practical, and easy-to-read information that is useful in planning and delivering prevention strategies.
Eleven "Focus On" topics are presented. The first few topics are about setting your sights on a prevention strategy. The focus then moves to ensuring that your prevention strategy is built on a solid foundation. The last few "Focus On" topics discuss ways to get the word out about prevention. For each "Focus On" topic, a two-page summary begins by telling why the step is important and what it includes. The discussion then moves to Starting Points-tips on key tasks, choices, and pointers for getting the job done.
Each "Focus On" topic also includes a highlight box with added advice or a diagram to show how the subject matter fits into the bigger picture. For those users of the Guide already committed to organizing Red Ribbon campaign activities, a section of specific how-to information and examples for working with media add to "Focus on Prevention"'s value as a tool that can be put to work right away. The guide ends with a list of resources to help community coalitions and other groups reach their substance abuse prevention goals. (.pdf)
- Preventing Drug Use Among Children and Adolescents: A Research-Based Guide for Parents, Educators, and Community Leaders
The second edition of this publication has been released. This edition is available in four formats that are free of charge:
- a full-sized complete version;
- an "In Brief" pamphlet-sized version;
- a laminated pocket-sized card that outlines the publication's 16 prevention principles for easy reference; and
- an abbreviated Spanish-language version.

- Age in Action Newsletter

Age in Action is a quarterly newsletter published jointly by the Virginia Center on Aging, the Virginia Geriatric Education Center, and the Virginia Department for the Aging. It targets anyone interested in senior activities and research in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Each issue highlights a case study based on current issues and concerns affecting seniors. The newsletter also provides information on professionals, organizations, or businesses in the field of aging, articles on topics concerning senior issues, updates on senior-related activities, meetings and conferences and more. Input and submissions are sought from readers.

- Consumer Product Safety Review

The Consumer Product Safety Review is published quarterly by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Review addresses issues involving consumer products, including recalls and injuries or deaths caused by consumer products. The Review and all other CPSC publications may be printed for free from the web site or ordered in hard copy form.

NIDA Notes is a newsletter that provides information about drug abuse research on treatment and prevention, epidemiology, neuroscience, behavioral science, health services and AIDS. The publication reports on research; identifies resources; and promotes communication among clinicians, researchers, administrators, policymakers, and the public.

Published twice a year and distributed nationwide, the ONDCP newsletter Strategies for Success: New Pathways to Drug Abuse Prevention provides a wealth of guidance and resources on student drug testing program development, implementation, and maintenance. Readers will be informed about events and developments in the field, including the latest research findings on the effectiveness of drug testing as a tool for reducing substance abuse. Strategies for Success can be accessed online, where you can also subscribe to receive future editions of the newsletter.
- Virginia Child Protection Newsletter
The Virginia Child Protection Newsletter (VCPN) is published quarterly by James Madison University in coordination with the Virginia Department of Social Services. Each newsletter is focused on one or more topics in child welfare. The articles provide a survey of literature and also address current practice issues.
- Virginia Department of Social Services - Domestic Violence News
The Office of Family Violence has started a newsletter for those interested in the prevention of domestic violence. This newsletter will keep abreast of news stories, in Virginia and nationwide, related to domestic violence. News stories, as well as grant opportunities, are sent out bi-monthly. - The Virginian Prevention Corner Newsletter
The Virginian Prevention Corner newsletter is a publication of Prevention Services in the Office of Substance Abuse Services (DMHMRSAS). The "Bragging Corner" highlights both professional and personal achievements in the prevention community.
